Reminds me of a teacher who insisted that Lord of the Rings must be a World War II allegory, and that we shouldn’t trust the author’s statements when he denies that.
There was a whole school of literary theory that said you couldn’t pay attention to anything the writer said. It was the text and the reader, which is an interesting and useful idea, but it can be taken too far.
